The students of Churchill State School had an absolute blast meeting the Mobil 1 MEGA Racing team and getting an up-close experience with the team’s two Supercars. These Supercars, driven by Scott Pye and James Courtney will be racing this weekend at Queensland Raceway in Ipswich. Affectionately known as ‘the paperclip’ due to its shape and layout, this small, yet technical track will play host to Round 9 of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.
It was a welcome change of pace to visit the school before the big race for the racing team. The kids were excited and asked a lot of interesting questions.
Blake in year 6 said, “My dad is a mechanic and I’m always working with him – I would love to work on a V8 car!”
John also in year 6 added, “Scott Pye is one of my favourite drivers. I’ve not had a chance to meet him and get his autograph! It’s very exciting and special – not many people actually get to see the drivers in person. Even mum is into racing!”
Not only did the students get the chance to meet their racing idols, but it also provided the school community the chance to fundraise.
Zahra in year 6 said, “Having them here is a great chance to fundraise for our student council for our school camps.” Parents, grandparents and the Churchill community came to the school to support the event. According to Kellie Stanton, Principal at Churchill State School, “The event forged stronger community partnerships and encouraged students and their families to be actively involved in our school. We are very thankful to VISA Global Logistics for picking our school and bringing the Mobil 1 MEGA Racing team to meet our students.”
Jadden, in year 6 said, “I know a lot about cars and have worked on a VK drag car with a V8 engine. I’d love to learn more from the racing team and one day I want to drive V8s. Warren Duff is one of my favourite drivers. I’m so excited that I met him today.”
VISA is proud to have brought the Mobil 1 MEGA Racing team to Churchill State School as part of the company’s community engagement initiatives.
